PASTORS PEN

23rd SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME YEAR A 4th/5th September 1999

Scripture References:- Ezekiel 33:7-9; Romans 13: 8-10; Matthew 18: 15-20.

Being responsible towards each other, calling people to conversion, repentance and forgiveness, acting in life according to the ethics of mutual love, seeking reconciliation and the healing of conflicts and offering forgiveness; these are the notes stuck in one or other of the weekend readings.

We do have responsibilities towards each other (Ezekiel 3: 8-9) though we are not ultimately responsible for the words, deeds or omissions of each other. The gift of human freedom leaves each and every one responsible for his/her behaviour. As believers in the Good News and followers of Jesus the Christ when acting responsibly towards others we act with the ethic of mutual love ie: do to others only what we would want done to ourselves and conversely, don’t do to others what we would not want done to ourselves (Romans reading).

The words of Matthew 18:18 about binding and loosing are an exact repeat of the words Jesus spoke to Peter after his profession of faith in the true and deepest identity of Jesus in Matthew 16:19! Today, Jesus speaks these same words not just to Peter but to all his followers. They are said immediately after Jesus teaching about how to seek reconciliation when a dispute arises (Matthew 18:15-17) and they precede Jesus promise to be present when his followers agree together to ask anything at all in prayer (Matthew 18:19-20).

The power to bind and loose is linked with the search for reconciliation of disputes and common agreement amongst believers in prayer and petition. To bind or to loose is no arbitrary power given to us. It can only be used in the search for peace and healing and in the union we share together in Christ who is present with us when we agree together.

SUMMARY OF ANNOUNCEMENT OF 28TH/29TH AUGUST

On the 17th August I met with Sr Deirdre Browne the Provincial of the Loreto sisters (I.B.V.M.) and successfully renegotiated our parish contract with her and the Institute. Thankfully, we will maintain the services, care and leadership of 2 Parish Pastoral Associates for a further 12 months until 31/12/2000. During this period there may be some change of personnel as Srs Margaret, Mary and the Institute discern their needs.

I am very grateful for the ministry, friendship and support of Srs Margaret and Mary who came to us in 1996. I know that in writing this I do so on behalf of the whole parish family.

I have to announce (as I did in person last weekend) that my own term as Pastor, Nerang Catholic Parish, will end on Sunday 26th December 1999. I have been with and among you for 8 years and I count them as the best in my life. Your support, welcome, friendship, guidance, care, occasional challenge and ultimate acceptance of me has been unparalleled in my 15 years of ordained ministry. A more generous, giving people I have not come across! So it is with very mixed emotions that I will bring my tenure of leadership and service to a conclusion. The Archbishop has offered me 6 months study (January through June 2000) and I have taken up this opportunity. I will study at the School of Applied Theology in Berkeley, California and at the Christian Institute for the Study of Human Sexuality in Washington D.C. Upon my return to Australia and the Archdiocese of Brisbane in July 2000 I am to discuss my future ministerial appointment with the Archbishop.

All parish members will be given the chance, via a community consultation (date to be advised) , to indicate their desires for the kind of Pastor they seek to head the parish into the new millennium!

I ask that there be only one farewell from the entire parish community. I suggest that it take place no later than mid December. Perhaps the Parish Pastoral Council can assume oversight of this event.

I beg your continued and renewed prayers for me during this demanding period of transition and while I am studying in the U.S.A. You can be assured of my leadership and service right up until the day of my departure. I will do all I can to ensure a smooth transition of Pastorship. You have my prayers for your good and that of the whole community now and my loving thoughts and fond memories always.

With my love and thanks for all you do for others. Fr Mark

The Vatican announced the canonisation of Pope John XX111 for September 3, 2000, whilst canonisation of Mother Teresa has just begun. A new translation of the Creed, faithful to the original Greek text, is being considered by the Vatican. Bishop Michael Fitzgerald, 62, has been tipped to succeed Cardinal Basil Hume as Catholic leader in England and Wales. Italian opera singer, Andrea Bocelli has been asked by the Pope to sing the Jubilee anthem in 2000. The Vatican has asked the Australian Bishops to host an international Social Justice Seminar at Melbourne in May, 2000. The Pope has been banned by the Chinese government from visiting Hong Kong, which raises fears that Hong Kong Catholics will face the same restrictions as Mainland China, which refuses to allow Catholics to acknowledge the Pope as head of the Church. The Vatican is arranging a meeting of 200 participants from the principal religions of the world to meet in the Vatican and Assissi in October this year as preparation for the Great Jubilee. The Catholic Church is to participate in cross-denominational talks to recalculate the date of Easter so that Eastern and Western rite Christians share the same Easter dates.
